Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson founded The Miracles while still in high school. The group was Berry Gordy/Motown’s first vocal group and Robinson’s first single “Shop Around” became Motown’s first No.1 hit on the R&B singles chart. In the years following, Robinson continued to pen hits for the group including “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “Ooo Baby Baby,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” “Going to a Go-Go,” “More Love,” “Tears of a Clown” (co-written with Stevie Wonder), and “I Second That Emotion.”

The Miracles dominated the R&B scene throughout the 1960s and early 70s and Robinson became Vice President of Motown Records, serving as in-house producer, talent scout and songwriter. In addition to writing hits for the Miracles, Robinson wrote and produced hits for other Motown greats including The Temptations, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye and others. He later turned to a solo career, where he continued his tradition of hit-making with “Just to See Her,” “Quiet Storm,” “Cruisin’,” and “Being with You,” among others.

Following his tenure at Motown, he continued his impressive touring career and released several successful solo albums. In 2004, he produced a spiritual album, Food for the Spirit, and launched a line of soul food entrees. Smokey Robinson Foods’ “The Soul is in the Bowl” products can be found in major supermarkets across the country. In 2006 he released Timeless Love, an album of standards, and he continues to set the bar by which others are judged, as evidenced by his 2009 recording Time Flies When You’re Having Fun. Smokey Robinson thrills sold-out audiences around the world with his high tenor voice, impeccable timing and profound sense of lyric. Never resting on his laurels, Smokey Robinson remains a beloved icon in our musical heritage.

Charlie Brown Christmas

Few icons are as recognizable as Charlie Brown and Snoopy. The beloved creations of Charles Schulz have become synonymous with childhood in America.

The continuing popular appeal of Peanuts stems, in large part, from Schulz’s ability to portray his observations and connect to his audience in ways that many other strips cannot. As each character’s personality has been fleshed out over the years, readers came to intimately understand Linus’ attachment to his Security Blanket, Charlie Brown’s heartache over the Little Red-Haired Girl, Schroeder’s devotion to Beethoven, Peppermint Patty’s prowess in sports and failure in the classroom, and Lucy’s knowledge of…well…everything. The rise in Snoopy’s popularity in the 1960s had a direct correlation to his evolution from a four-legged pet to a two-legged, highly-imaginative and equal character in the strip, which allowed Schulz to take his storylines in increasingly new directions.Schulz’s understated genius lay in his ability to keep his well-known and comfortable characters fresh enough to attract new readers while keeping his current audience coming back for more. His humor was at times observational, wry, sarcastic, nostalgic, bittersweet, silly, and melancholy, with occasional flights of fancy and suspension of reality thrown in from time to time. When Schulz announced his retirement in December 1999, the Peanuts comic strip was syndicated in over 2,600 newspapers worldwide, with book collections translated in over 25 languages.
